[mood | calm]
[music |hot chip- "over and over"]

This past week at home, I've spent a better portion on YouTube digging up the stupidest videos I could find to entertain my brother.  Our intellect usually cascades down to the level of a dead rhino after reaching the 15-minute mark of watching people get hurt in increasingly dumber ways.  At least this clip doesn't feature any shots of some guy getting kicked in the nuts.

Way to go BBC for interviewing the IT expert's driver.

Holy shit, is this not a kickass shirt or what?

I've decided to start posting some mp3s here:

The image “http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00009EIPG.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

GLENN BRANCA- "The Ascension"

Besides having a stunning album cover, Glenn Brannca's The Ascension is up there with Lesson No. 1 as his best work IMHO.  This album came out  right at the end of that whole NY No-Wave era, and the title track is 13 minutes of just gorgeous rising and crashing guitar bliss.

The image “http://www.volcanictongue.co.uk/images/maimdisfigure/lambsbreadgreasychannel.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

LAMBSBREAD- "Track 2" (from Greasey Channels CD-R)

These guys are touring with the Magik Markers right now, and they'll be stopping by Iowa City on June 22nd @ the Hall Mall.  It will definitely be THE fucking rock show of the summer, fo shore.  Lambsbread floats around the same realm of total noise death rock destruction ala Hair Police and Dead C. They also have some of the best CD-R covers in recent memory.  Can't fucking wait.

The image “http://www.metrotimes.com/sb/107844/Spun_matmos.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

MATMOS- "Roses and Teeth for Ludwig Wittgenstein"
Wasn't the biggest fan of The Civl War, but their new one's got 10 songs all saluting different stylistic/musical influences on the laptop duo. Nice range-from Larry Levan to Darby Crash in just 5 tracks!  The Levan track is a great spliced-up messy IDM funk cut, but "Roses" has a sweet spoken intro by the same female computer voice that appeared on Soft Pink Truth (1/2 of Matmos)'s 2004 covers album Do You Want New Wave or Do You Want The Soft Pink Truth?
BTW, here's SPT's fucking great cover of Crass's "Do They Owe Us A Living?":

SOFT PINK TRUTH - "Do They Owe Us A Living"

The image “http://this.bigstereo.net/wp-content/uploads/2006/05/nightripper.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

GIRL TALK- “Bounce That”

I remember stumbling upon Girl Talk's second album Unstoppable early one Friday morning at KRUI my sophmore year, and fucking loving it.  It went from Fiddy to Creation to T.A.T.U. to AC/DC to Busta inna bout 20 seconds flat.  Yeah yeah yeah, mash-ups are sooooo 2003.  Whatevs.  Night Ripper is total mindblowing party shit right.  Illegal Art is distributing it clearance-free, and oddly enough I saw an add for it in the latest issue of The Wire, so they're obviously letting it be known that they're dropping a totally copyright-raping cd.
This track is a disco-lite flavored beat with some samplings of LCD Soundsystem, Breeders, "Shake The Rump," and some Houston chopped-and-screwed shit (Paul Wall, maybe?).

P.S.  The Thom Yorke solo album The Eraser leaked today.  I won't post any tracks, but I'll tell you where to find it: ...

[music |residual echoes]

so much to do so much to do.  let's see, last night mi and l'au played at the mill and ended with a bunch of loud people talking over them.  xiu xiu redux.  the dude from mi and l'au (laurent) was french and didn't care, and called himself a "freedom fry" a lot.  mi was pretty quiet.  ms. meghan sims and i felt bad for them, so we bought em a glass of wine. lots of drinking.  other things as well. i called michael gira and told him swans was a cool band.  l'au said something weird and then apologized by saying "i'm sorry, i'm a freakfolk!"  he also said he loves clint eastwood, not for his recent film work or star persona, but because he gave citizens of a californian city free ice cream in the street. the evening ended with him proclaming the breeders as the greatest band of the 90s. wow.

so there's some shows coming up.  ms. alison feldman (aka Lady A aka Jerri Blank) and myself are looking to have a permanent dj night at yacht club every tuesday from now on.  the first show will be a warm up of sorts on feb 7.

tuesday feb 14 will be a big valentine's day massacre blowout.

80s, 90s, disco, new wave, punk, post-punk, and definitely popozao.

yeahhhhhh.

well.....?

meanwhile, jesus christ decided to come back early in the form of kevin fenderline. "popozao." words and comprehensible sentences almost escape me. if you haven't seen this clip of k fed premiering his hot new "brazilian ass shaker" song, then do watch. it's like watchign a snuff film.  there's basically eight million great things about this clip, but here are some of my favorite:

1.) before he starts the song, he calls popo zao a "brazilian ass shaker" and then asks if he can say that on tv.  he then smirks "right on" like he already knew the answer was gonna be yes.  such a badass.  nobody bleeps k fed.

2.)  the poor sap editor mtv got to cut this little clip obviously knew it was beyond awful, so he tries to spice it up by doing a cut wipe back and forth between shots of k fed, including a fucking sweet zoom-in close up.

3.) k fed doesn't know what the fuck to do with his hands, so he has them act out the lyrics.  he motions forward when the line "bring dat ass" is said.  he twirls his fingers on the line "all around."  the cherry on the fucking sundae is him miming slapping a girl's ass.  god i hope he makes brittany listen to this song when they bone in the rv.

4.)  someone in the background occasionally takes a snap flash photo, as if to preserve the moment when american culture has reached the intelligence level of a shitting gorilla.

5.)  the great prop guitars in the background to give the impression that it's a real studio.

6.)  besides the chorus of "popozao,"  one of the lyrics is "i wanna see some kitty and a little bit of titty."

7.)  i pretty sure the beats are from the apple program Soundtrack.

8.)  "That's fire!"

9.) eyes closed.  swaying his head back and forth. mouthing the words. killing me softly with his song.

back in my old neighborhood...? [Dec. 27th, 2005|07:45 pm]
[music |the lappetites]

now that this whole break thing is underway, i've had time to stretch out, relax a little, and check out some stuff i've been putting off due to school/work/etc. i'm reading Bret Easton Ellis's new book Lunar Park, and although it's not my favorite by him so far, it's funny as hell in some parts. Vintage Ellis with the dry prose and detached, alienated, too-cool-for-any-school wit that we all oh-so-love. Bless you you fucked-up yuppie cokehead socialite.  if i have time i want to read A People's History of the United States, although that won't happen i bet.

so so many new wonderful records/books/films to dive into, clearly not enough time to do all. newness for '06 that is good on first listen: excepter's sunbomber  ep and liars's  drum's not dead.  heard the new strokes record. the fact is is that i unashamedly love their first one. even room on fire had some great cuts.  this one though...eh. not.that.good. wah wah casanblancas "i don't like being a rock star"-type stuff. meh.  maybe another listen.

movies are another thing too.  "brokeback mountain" was amazing.  "the new world"  was even better.  malick slays. top list of my favorites of everything 2005 soon.

new york.  here again.  the subways still smell the same.  i got a little teary-eyed i must admit.

new years eve in a few.  picked another person to go to iowa city.  my car can hold no more.

also, congradulations to raccoo-oo-oon.  the cave of spirits forever got a very very nice review in the newest issue of The Wire.  way to go homeboys.

THIS HITS JUST KEEP ON COMING [Dec. 13th, 2005|09:19 am]
[mood | dorky]
[music |possible DJ music for kickass new years party]

As I write this I have just finished my Film Theory final that I put 8 hours of studying into. Avant-garde and the "controlled accidents" of Dreyer's realism?  Overtonal montage editing? The ontological relationship as pertaining to Bazin's discussion of neorealism?  Yeah, got all that.  1 final down, one to go at 2:15. It's for American Politics, but I could care less.

Here's what I'm really pumped about though.  Some footage I shot of Wolf Eyes/ Raccoo-oo-oon/ Mr. Bret Szymoniak spitting rhymes has just gone up on Ecstatic Peace. The Raccoo-oo-oon footage didn't upload properly, but I plan to send it to Andrew at Ecstatic via the ole fashioned mail.   Scroll down to December 12 and watch the chaos.

http://www.ecstaticpeace.com

The tenative title for the doc I'm working on is Feedback Nation, and I will be able to concentrate on it more once I (hopefully) move out to New York.  I have shot this plus a Nautical Almanac interview, so slowly but surely its chugging along.  More on that later though.   New York in a few days, new years in iowa city in a few more.  yes, yes, yes.

YOU'RE NOT REAL, GIRL [Oct. 6th, 2005|05:06 pm]
[music |sunn o)))- "black one"]

i've been keeping with the activities as of late to distract me from the wreckage of a few weeks ago, but i can say all the extra curriculars have been keeping my mind off shit.
ampersand magazine #1 will be out shortly (hopefully next week by wednesday at the latest).  charlie's article about the mtv2 show "wondershozen" made me crap my pants.  hopefully a website will be up soon.

KRUI-TV premiered its second season last Sunday night too. it's funny to look back and watch the first episode of KRUI-TV from a year ago and look at how crappy it was.  i'm not saying this year's shit is MTV or anything, but i'm actually happy with how much better the presentation and content is. i hope more people are watching this year, but since UITV doesn't have Nielsen ratings i'm not sure.  the bestest thing in the world will be KRUI-TV's Halloween episode. yeah, "thriller" will be on, but i'm psyched for videos from gwar, metallica, residents, manowar, the short film "rubber johnny" by chris cunningham, and some other shit.  (anyone know any other scary music videos?)
and then the new video for black dice's "smiling off,"  which is probably the best video i've seen all year:

The image “http://videos.antville.org/static/videos/images/bdvidstill.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

it's the same guy behind animal collective's brilliant tortoise-and-the-hare-on-acid video for "who could win a rabbit?"  here's an interview with him that links to the video.

[music |(smog)]

so i was hoping this would be the first single form devendra banhart's new album, and i'm sure glad it is.  a nice folky salsa number to keep you shaking on these upcoming crisp autumn nights.  the video just went up, and while there's not a whole lot to it, it's great to see banhart dancing around in his boxers like the freaky folky that he is.  maybe hippies don't suck so much.

bloc party ringtones!? that cute girl down at the quad will be so impressed! [Aug. 5th, 2005|02:12 pm]
[music |the musique concrete-like sound of suburban malaise]

so yeah, being back home from new york is sweet and all blah blah blah, let's get to the heart of the matter:  Oddsagainstseven.com.  If this doens't ring a bell, be sure to check out the website.  Shit indie-rock is nothing more than just cultural placement now. The Target Corporation (at least their slightly better than Wal-Mart) has created a short film/marketing campaign that features indie-rock bands placement with "O.C."-like indie yuppie hipsters just entering college for the company's back-to-school sale:
The image “http://www.stereogum.com/img/oddsagainst7even.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.
I'm sure we all can relate, I know I've racked my brain over where to file a shitty Astralwerks band in my collection one too many times.  The indie-rock girl lead Madison is also busy talking on her Target cell phone to her long distance boyfriend  while wearing her bitching Killers t-shirt.  In all fairness, this isn't an attempt to mock Target in an elitist dick kind of way, and  it seems cruel to not give Target some points for trying (at least their not selling firearms).  I'm just amused at the outright pigeonholing and simplification of these Seth Cohen-esque creatures.  Still, good production values on the shorts.

BUY MORE RINGTONES!!!

(no subject) [Jul. 24th, 2005|02:48 pm]
[mood | chipper]
[music |the sounds of the pete and pete summer episode]

last night's show out in a queens parking lot was one of those experiences that reminded me of why i like noise music in the first place. it was a show put on by local promoter Todd P that started at 3PM and ended at 3AM. 12 bands=roughly 12 hours.  my face has melted off.

so many bands were there, but here's the ones that stood out the most. possible pictures coming soon:
  Matt & Kim:
super spaz dance drum and keyboards duo that have apparently opened up for a gazillion brooklyn punk shows.  impossible not to smile while you're watching them.  if gary wilson or atom&his package met the woman of his dreams, it would sound like this:
  http://www.mattandkimmusic.com

   Growing:
finally got a chance to see them, and they slayed. total drone fuck bliss.  made the afternoon sun not seem as hot as it was:
  http://www.growingsound.com

  Parts & Labor:
second time seeing them, and they sounded even better.  definitely had the crowd going.  the stuff off their new release sounds phenominal.  the power going out in the at the end of their set was a sign of things to come:
  http://www.partsandlabor.net

   Japanther:
this is one of those bands i've heard about for a while, but never got into.  damn.  weird phone samples, sick sreaming, sing-a-long choruses.  their power went out something like 5 or 6 times (it was dark by now and the extension cords kept getting stepped on) and they still got the best response of the day, until later of course:
   http://www.tapesrecords.com/secretsight.html

  Afrirampo:

japanese guitar and drum girl duo from John Zorn's label.  psych-pop freak show.  they had painted faces, dressed in the same outfits (!), jumped up and down during songs,  and i think one of the guys from the boredoms was in their posse.  makes sense:
    http://www.afrirampo.com/

   Lightning Bolt:
olga and i stood on a shaky picnic table with several other people in the middle of a sea of sweaty bodies, and there were several times i thought the table would snap in half.  at nearly 2 in the morning lightning bolt got everyone banging their heads and pounding their fists together.  it was kind of surreal to see everyone acting in tandum to stuff like "13 monsters."  their new album could put them somewhere beyond the whole Providence noise scene, somewhere like ESPN-highlight reels areas.  seriously, when i was standing on the table there was a decent amount of cock rock dudes moshing in the audience, backwards hats and all.  i REALLY hope what i'm thinking doesn't happen.  can you imagine the drummer's phone mask thing as the next backwards-red-Yankees-hat?
  new album on oct. 18th:
  http://www.loadrecords.com

so yeah, the show was killer.  one of the best times i've had here so far.  in fact, the second half of july has been majestic.  the family was up here not too long ago, and we had a splendid family time.  we even saw Corey Feldman in his off-broadway rendition of "Fatal  Attraction." Guess what?  The Feldmeister still has it. It was a campy re-imagning of the Michael Douglas movie, cooked rabbit and all, and the rest of the cast did their damn best to cover up the fact that the only reason most people saw the show was for our favorite 80s teen star.  Two for flinching.
The image “http://www.poster.net/feldman-corey/feldman-corey-photo-xl-corey-feldman-6209502.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

I also had a rather surreal experience a few Thursdays ago too. I was suppossed to shoot the Magik Markers at the Central Park Sumemr Stage, but when I arrived security wouldn't have at it. Something about bootlegging and all. Clear Channel-type bullshit. In any event, they let me in with my still camera, and I snapped some of their amazing set. Most of the kiddies were there for Broken Social Scene and Radio 4, and the violated look on their faces after the Markers set was gorgeous. The lead singer Elise kept battling it out with the security guards, and one of the larger ones kept saying to me how he would "take care of her" if she came any closer. Awesome dude.

The whole event was an abolsute trip. Magik Markers destroyed, Radio4/Broken Social Scene kept the kids in check, and Dino Jr. were epic. Backstage, I felt like the kid from Almost Famous. Anyways, here's some of my favorite pictures from the show. I've yet to switch to a digital camera, hence my amateurism and graininess:

I ask of film what most North Americans ask of psychedelic drugs. [Jul. 7th, 2005|03:00 am]
[music |arthur russell]

today i finally saw alejandro jodorowsky's "el topo," a movie i've wanted to check out for the past few years, but because of its unavailability on region 1 dvd it's been impossible to find a decent copy without having to fork over $50 to buy it. bless kim's video- i found an italian dvd version of rent buried in the cult section. the film melted my head. it's up there with eraserhead and maybe salo as one of those films that you just sit and absorb all of its abuse. the quote above is from jodorowsky, and an italian critic in the dvd liner notes described it as a sergio leone film made under the supervision of buddhist monks, which is a pretty good summary. apparently, the legal dispute involves former beatles manager allen klein refusing to give up the rights to the movie. john lennon saw it back before it had distribution and advised klein to pick it up for ABKCO pictures. jodorowsky's third film "holy mountain" is apparently even more bizarre (daren-i'm so jealous you saw it!). today i also picked up a few albums: arthur russell's "calling out of context", a 70s glam comp, and yes, controversial cover art and all, sufjan stevens' "illinois." sadly yes, it does make me miss chicago very much, and i'm glad sufjan put this out now, because it was obviously made for me. but there's other things to ponder: - people from new york public tv that i've shown krui-tv have reacted positively. there's a show here called NY Noise that's similar to krui-tv, except waaaaay better production and presentation. i'm losing my edge: http://www.nyc.gov/html/nycmg/nyctv/html/shows/nynoise.shtml - the internships alternate between blah and exciting. the BET one is dicking me over on money they said i would receive PLUS internship credits. so far, no sign of $$$. and today at raw media i edited a trailer for a hotel marketing awards ceremony. the trailer was as exciting as the said event sounds. - the family is coming this weekend. jeff and i will hopefully get tickets for the UCB theater. - looks like more footage will go up on ecstatic peace soon. tomorrow i get to tape the magik markers again, this time in central park performing with dinosaur jr, radio 4, and broken social scene. i finally got a copy of "you're living all over me" to prep, and i'm amazed i slept on it for so long. normally all that early 90s grunge stuff gets passed off, but i smell a 90s revival any year now. keep that copy of primitive radio gods close to your stereo...

get your gay on! [Jun. 27th, 2005|11:11 pm]
[music |the wind-up bird]

Gay Pride 2005 took over New York this weekend, to the point where I think I myself am now gay.  Seriously, you could barely walk down any street in the West Village yesturday, as the parade crowded nearly every square inch of concrete.  Nonetheless, I got around.

I went to go see an early matinee of Ozu's Record of a Tenement Gentleman with Alex, his BU friend Dave, and a girl from Focus Features named Sasha that Alex works with.We saw it up at the new IFC theater on 6th, which for the last two weeks has been flooded with union protestors accusing the IFC of hiring non-union workers. They even had a giant inflatable rat. Ironically enough, about five minutes into the picutre the print snapped, causing a delay while the projectionist fixed it.Here's a photo from last weekend (sans rat):The image “http://nyc.indymedia.org/usermedia/image/13/152940_000_0033.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Despite the early mishap, the film was typical Ozu in that it was mostly static and slow-paced, but I found that it played great for a Sunday morning, the kind of film where a camera move is equivilant to a special effect.  After taking in such a wonderfully minimalistic film on a fine Sunday afternoon, we decided the next culturally stimulating thing was to get drunk.

We went to a nice dive bar called Double Down that had $1 PBRs. It had been a while since I got drunk on a Sunday (how I remember those church-going days), and it was honestly enjoyable.Dave and Sasha split while Alex and I wandered next door to Kim's Video where I rented the 1990 classic Cool As Ice starring Vanilla Ice. I went home, watched 20 minutes, and passed out.  A good day. Thanks Rob:The image “http://www.badmovies.org/movies/coolasice/coolasice8.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Here's a clip to demonstrate its brilliance:
http://www.badmovies.org/multimedia/moviesx/coolasice1.mpg

Today, however, sucked at work.  I was out delivering stuff in the early morning and saw that I had to stop at BET's head office.  The address I was given said BET was at 55 W 57th.  I got there, and there was no 55 on W57th.  But there was a 555 W 57th.  Six avenues later admist the humid rain, I dropped off the daily rushes.  Ehhhh...

As I'm writing this too, the distance of New York from my friends from back home and in Iowa is getting hard.  I miss them a lot, and as bad as it sounds I haven't made the most of all my time here because of my unwillingness to go outside of my West Village neighborhood. The desire to do something creative is starting to get to me as well.  Over the last week or so, there's been a weird group of signs that have been telling me to get off my ass and do something.  And my tendency towards harsh self-criticism of my work has hindered lots of my output, to the point where I feel like I can't do anything original.
The BET show "Ultimate Hustler" is not art.  That's obvious even to me.  But do you have to make something crappy in order to be able to do your own personal art?  Is it one for them and one for you?   A weird thing happenned last Tuesday...
They recently relocated me to help with editing duties amongst other things, and around 10:00AM Aaron Warren of the noise band Black Dice walks in to assitant edit the show.  It was really surreal.  I was hestiant at first to confirm that it was indeed Aaron from Black Dice, but I asked him and he seemed surprised that I knew his band.  (As I breifly shift into geek mode, I can honestly count "Beaches and Canyons" as one of those records that ripped my head wide fucking open, and to see this guy was equivilant to seeing a person like Billy Corgan back when I was 12.)
But here he was, editing a freelance thing on something that obviously wasn't even in the same cultural league as his work, just because he had to.  For some unknown reason I've sort of lived under the dillusion that independent musicians don't have day jobs, that all they do is stay at home and make amazing art or travel the world performing, but here he was doing the same stuff as me.  It was bizarre. It was a kick in the ass.
Then, I went to Tonic last Friday to tape the band the Magik Markers.  They're defintely one of those bands I have the utmost respect for, as they really just do their own thing and don't care about the rest of the Pitchfork-approved bands.  The footage I've seen of them before was astounding, something like a hardcore show with Lydia Lunch in the middle of it all.
I chatted with them beforehand, thinking they would be a group of tortured artist-types who speak in non-sequitors, but they were completely the opposite.  The girls were bright and as cheery as can be, and for a moment I thought I had introduced myself to the wrong band.  Elisa the lead singer was actually from Chicago too.  She was so fucking charming it killed me. Seeing their drummer Pete maintain his shit while the girls freaked out on their guitars really started to fuel my desire to play the drums. Here's some pictures from the show, and the video should be up on Ecstatic Peace shortly.  Be on the lookout for the dumbass standing in the background:
http://ecstaticpeace.com/mm_pics2.html

In any event, maybe it's just the frustration of a long day at work, or missing my friends way too much, or feeling incredibly guilty for living in New York for the summer when I feel like my internships don't justify it, but if I don't do something with music soon I'll go nuts. Fill the void that work and rent create.  CAN YOU HEAR US?!

Because i'm putting off doing laundry, that's why [Jun. 25th, 2005|04:06 pm]
[music |deathprod- "treerop drive 2"]

List five songs that you are currently digging. It doesn't matter what genre they are from, whether they have words, or even if they're any good but they must be songs you're really enjoying right now. Post these instructions, the artists, and the five songs in your blog. Then tag five other people to see what they're listening to.

1- BEAT HAPPENNING- "OUR SECRET"
Actually, it's more like I've been digging this song since the beginning of the year.  I heard this off my brother's "Left of the Dial" boxset back in January, and truth be told I'd never heard a Beat Happenning song before, and I don't really like the whole twee/cutsie/goofy/fluff pop stuff, but this song just kicks my ass.  It's every junior high romance, every quick fling, every crush, every sitting-on-a-suburban-roof-and-watching-the-summer-sun-set-with-a-pretty-girl memory you've ever had.  Bonnie and Clyde with toy squirt guns.

2- SUN CITY GIRLS- "SPACE PROPHET DOGON"
Another band I find it hard to listen to any other song they make because this one is so damn good.  A seven-minute misty mountain hop with the Middle Eastern preachers singing to a temple of recently converted followers.  This is probably what I'd listen to if I ever crossed the Alps.

3- MILFORD GRAVES- "GRAND UNIFICATION"
This is a free jazz drummer from the 60s who includes himself in John Zorn's posse.  He even played at ole Zorn's big 50th b-day bash!  This one is the title cut off a 1998 album, and it combines a multitude of African and Western drums and congas.  Bizarre spoken-word/singing, huge gong bashes, etc.  I likeee.

4-CYMANDE- "BRA"
I listen to this on my walk through Harlem and it makes me feel as white as that albino kid from "Elephant."

5- SUSANNA AND THE MAGICAL ORCHESTRA- "BELIEVER"
The lonliest voice in New York.

check out this whole avalanche of bullshit...

From Tinymixtapes.com:

"Sony BMG and EMI to Kill Mix CDs With Their Anti-Piracy Hatchet, Compatibility Issues with iPod

Listen to this, dude. I've got something that will totally flip your lid. You know how sometimes you buy a CD and you like, ya know, get real excited about it because it's something that you're totally diggin' on? And then you want to, like, share the love and shit and you rip those tracks onto your computer and throw in a blank CD-R and burn a couple off to give to your friends because you know they'll totally dig it too? Or how sometimes you want the perfect soundtrack for burnin' a few bowls with friends on a summer night and you want to make a mix CD of all the best songs to chill out to? Well take a seat bro, because those corporate assholes at Sony BMG and EMI are trying to take away that right, man!

According to Billboard, Sony BMG has quietly slipped about a million discs by 10 different artists -- whom they won't name -- into the market featuring anti-piracy technology from some United Kingdom company called First4Internet. This new technology totally stops you from making more than a few copies of a disc, and it also stops your friend from making a copy of his copy. They call it "sterile burning." I call it a total bummer! And this is just the beginning, man. More of Sony BMG's partners are beginning commercial trials of similar technology within the month, and since there has been no obvious backlash (YET), Sony BMG announced that it will extend this security to all of its American releases by the end of the year.

But Sony BMG is not the only conglomerate putting its foot down. According to Digital Music News, EMI is also cracking down on "casual piracy." Within the next few weeks, EMI releases will also include restrictive technology on piracy. Developed by DRM solutions firm Macrovision, the technology allows CD owners to copy only three copies of a CD's songs, and similar to Sony BMG's "sterile burning," those burned copies cannot be duplicated.

However, this increased CD protection comes at a big cost. Any CD released by Sony BMG or EMI with this protection cannot be transferred to the ever-so popular iPod. In an age of iPod-mania, this could result in a huge backlash once the happy-go-lucky public finds out about this tight security control. In fact, this is precisely the reason why both Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group have yet to dive into the murky depths of CD protection.

These suits consider this to be, like, one of the most important developments in copyright protection. So like, what's all the huffin' and puffin' about file-sharing networks all about then? If two-thirds of all piracy comes from ripping and burning CDs, then why aren't they making a big stink about it? Instead, they put up all this smoke and mirrors bullshit about file-sharing while they quietly slip some of these "sterile burn" CDs into the marketplace without tellin' anyone. I mean, it's like they want to piss off the very people that are actually buying the CDs. One day you'll be tryin' to make a mix CD and your computer won't let you and you'll get all pissed and start punching your computer because you don't know what the hell is going on. I'm tellin' ya man, something stinks! But if Sony BMG and EMI actually think that these new protective measures are going to stop piracy, they better think again. Though there might be some confusion/frustration at first, things will get right back on the piracy track once another digtal (or even analog) technique of piracy hits the Internet-savvy public.

Fuck it, just stick with independent music and you'll be just fine."

this is a very good way to piss off 100% of ipod owners.

i can't sing for shit [Jun. 19th, 2005|02:54 pm]
[mood | tired]
[music |stack]

the other night i went to a karaoke bar with people from alex's new yorker floor. coincidently, on eof the girls was form iowa, and she said she had heard about idate last fall. i told her the show was canceled after one episode.

alex and i did a stirring rendition of nancy sinatra's "boots are made for walking." it was around the second verse i realized my career in singing will not be a sucess. still, we outshined the old guy who dedicated "i'll make love to you" to the iowa girl who was 21. eewwwwww....

last night, i saw an amazing show at tonic. simon finn put out one album way back in the 70s, and since even SPIN magazine is writing about the folk revival now, finn has seen his album re-released and he's recorded a new one as well:
http://www.brainwashed.com/brain/brainv08i22.html

needless to say, it was a treat to see him live. he closed with my two favorites, "jerusalem" and "big white car" before casually walking off stage and waving.

the openeers were just as phenominal. queens is a solo project from scott mou of Jane/Other Music and, despite his technical problems halfway through, he played magificently. it sounded like arthur russell channeled through animal collective. his 30-minute cd is mindblowing, and easily one of the best things i've heard this year.

and then, out comes thurston moore to do an acoustic set of jandek-like tunes. goddamn. towards the end, after doing songs best linked to his "psychic hearts" solo stuff, he walks over to the amp, drops a mic down, and does an improv noise set for about 10 minutes. it was hilarious, about half the people looked spooked while the other were going nuts.

outside afterwards i saw kim gordon with her daughter (seriously, how cool is their daughter gonna be when she grows up?). i told her sonic youth should play iowa. she looked mildly amused.

my bank account is getting raped bigtime. comets on fire/growing/sightings this thursday and magik markers on friday.

here's somehting else to rape my bank account (mr.t educational video? i'm speechless):

this is from a while ago apparently, but it's something i want to see: a french documentary concerning vincent gallo and all the people he hates. it's called "48 People Who Should Be Shot in Hollywood." Here's an article with the director:
